Principal’s News – May 2023

“You’re off to great places.  Today is your day.  Your mountain is waiting so get on your way!” – Dr. Seuss

The 2022-2023 school year is quickly coming to an end.  The month of May is full of activities, field trips, and hopefully beautiful weather.  Teachers will be communicating dates and times of all the scheduled activities. You can also find this information on Parent Square.

Summer is going to be here before we know it!  Fresh foods will be abundant at local farmer’s markets, stores and, hopefully in your own backyard.  Look for new varieties, try creating new recipes.  Get the kids involved and see what they come up with on the recipe front.  Some veggies are better eaten raw, some are actually nutritionally better for you if they are cooked first; such as spinach, mushrooms, carrots, tomatoes, and broccoli. Mom always said, “don’t play with your food.”  However, go play with your food and enjoy the adventure. Have a great summer.

As spring and warm weather is approaching, please be aware of appropriate dress for school.  Crop tops, bare midriffs, spaghetti strap tank tops, and short shorts are not allowed. Closed toe shoes are required for Playworks/P.E.

Our emergency drill for the month is for employees only; a brief training on the Public Health Emergency system.

“As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others.”-Bill Gates

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”– Hellen Keller

Our life skill for the month of May is ‘Teamwork and Leadership’.  Teamwork means coming together to solve a problem or achieve a shared goal. Working on a team means you communicate your needs and listen to the needs of others. It is sharing ideas and expertise. With teamwork, you learn to trust others, think about other people’s perspectives, compromise and understand different points of view.

There will be times when we want to work by ourselves, but have to work as a team, or we are on a team we do not want to be on. It is important to have skills to persevere and still be a good teammate. Teamwork is a life skill that helps us understand the importance of working together respectfully and sharing ideas with each other.

Leadership cannot happen without working with others. A leader is responsible for the same things that everyone in a team is responsible for. However, a leader motivates others, influences and guides others, communicates assertively, stays positive, has flexible thinking and leads by example. A good leader understands their responsibility as a role model to their teammates. A successful leader and a successful team work together to achieve goals.

To reinforce this skill, Mrs. Blake will be reading The Golden Acorn by Katy Hudson to the kindergarten, first grade and second grade classes. Ms. Ashley will be reading Stone Soup by John J. Muth to the third, fourth and fifth grade classes.

Mrs. Blake, Ms. Ashley and Ms. Marissa have enjoyed working with the students at Draper Elementary to build these life skills.

It’s time to say good-bye; it’s the end of the year.  I think there’s something in my eye, no, it’s just a tear.  I’ve watched you learn and grow and change from day to day.  I hope you’ve come to know skills to guide your way.  So, I’ll treasure happy memories as I send you out the door, hoping you have the wisdom for what life may hold in store.  – A Teacher’s Hope
