Principal’s News – March 2023
Our life skill for the month of March is ‘Celebrating Differences’. As children develop, they should also be learning acceptance of themselves and others—that each of us are alike and each of us are different, and that we are all valuable. Diversity is something to be appreciated. It helps us realize that we’re all humans, despite differences in how we look or dress, or what we eat or celebrate. Diverse environments promote creativity, motivation, deeper learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Encountering new and different ideas helps us learn to respect the differences of others. As we celebrate each of our differences, we are more likely to demonstrate kindness towards each other. To reinforce this skill, Mrs. Blake will be reading I’m Like You, You’re Like Me by Cindy Gainer to the kindergarten, first grade and second grade classes. Ms. Ashley will be reading When Jackie and Hank Met by Cathy Goldberg Fishman to the third, fourth and fifth grade classes.
Since March is the month for tiny Leprechauns, I thought I would give you an itsy-bitsy list of small things you can do every day to become much healthier:
- Drink 2 cups of water upon rising in the morning
- Down I Tablespoon of full fat plain yogurt (gut health)
- Stretch for 10 minutes
- Do a plank for 1 minute
- Embrace sunshine for 15 minutes
- Silence phone at night.
- Eliminate electronics 2 hours before bed.
- READ 10 minutes before sleep
The website https://raisingchildren.net (links to an external site) states: Work-life balance is the relationship between your work and the other important things in your life, like your family, sport and social life, household chores, volunteer commitments and so on. If you feel like you have enough time for all of these things in your life, you probably have a good work-life balance. And when you have a good work-life balance, you’re more likely to have the mental and emotional energy to give your children the loving attention they need to develop, learn and thrive. A well-balanced family life can also help you enjoy life, manage stress, and prevent burnout at work. Young children need regular quality time with you. Quality time can happen in a quick and unplanned way most days – it’s about making sure that even short interactions with your children are focused and loving. Quality time can also be longer and planned.
Parents know firsthand the impact a poor night’s sleep has on kids. Lack of sleep can contribute to crankiness, problems with attention and learning, behavior issues, and even health problems such as obesity. Though the reasons for poor sleep vary, there’s growing evidence that media and technology interfere with bedtime routines and sleep. Our drill for the month of March is to check all carbon monoxide detectors. Students will not participate in this drill. The school administration and facilities staff will conduct the drill and assess any further action, if necessary.
We are currently enrolling Kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year. If you have neighbors, friends, etc. with an incoming kindergartener, please have them contact the office.
