This week our 4th Graders were invited to view the Martha Hughes Cannon exhibit at Draper City Hall. A representative from “Better Days” came to teach them about Martha Hughes Cannon and what it meant for women to get the right to vote. We learned that “franchised” means “able to vote”. In the 1800s, women were given the right to vote (enfranchisement) and then it was taken away from them (disenfranchised). Because of the hard work of women-like Martha Hughes Cannon, the right to vote was given back to women! Martha Hughes Cannon was the first female state senator in the United states-she served on the Utah Senate from 1896-1900. She also valued education and had received 4 degrees by the time she was 25! Martha Hughes Cannon has been selected to be one of the historical figures that represents Utah at the Capitol in Washington DC.
Following the presentation by Better Days, mayor Troy Walker did a brief question and answer time with the students. Then each student was able to walk by and see what the monument looks like.
4th graders have been studying Utah history this year, and they have learned a lot about some incredible people like Martha Hughes Cannon. They will be presenting what they have learned in n Utah program on May 17th at 6:30 PM.
